Can water damage cause mold in your home?

Yes. Water damage can cause mold when materials stay damp, and growth can begin within 24 to 48 hours under the right conditions.

How quickly can mold begin growing?

Mold can begin growing within 24 to 48 hours when moisture, warmth and porous materials are present. Even clean water from a burst pipe or supply line can lead to mold if drywall, flooring or other materials stay damp long enough.

Most mold problems we treat in North Idaho and Spokane began after an unnoticed leak or an incomplete DIY drying attempt. Because growth may be hidden, the absence of visible spots does not mean every affected material is dry.

Why damp materials support mold growth

Homes and businesses already contain organic materials such as wood, carpet, insulation, drywall and framing. When a leaking pipe, wet drywall or damp subfloor adds moisture, normal indoor warmth can create conditions that support mold growth. Indoor temperatures between 68 and 86°F are one possible condition.

Growth often begins behind drywall and baseboards, under carpet, padding or hardwood flooring, and inside insulation or cabinets. Crawlspaces, attics, HVAC closets and utility rooms may also hold moisture where it can remain unnoticed for days or weeks. Hidden mold can spread through a property in days.

When to call a restoration company

Professional drying may be appropriate when water has remained in place, the source may be contaminated, or moisture is trapped where you cannot reach it. Drying and moisture checks can help address damp materials before the problem becomes larger. A restoration company can use moisture mapping and leak detection to look for damp areas that may not be visible.

Contact a restoration company if any of these conditions apply:

  • Water has been sitting for more than a few hours
  • You see or smell mold
  • The leak occurred behind walls or under flooring
  • A basement or crawlspace was involved
  • The water came from a contaminated source
  • DIY drying did not fully resolve the moisture
